Outward Bound is one of New Zealand’s leading organisations for showing people their full potential through outdoor challenge and adventure. Over 65,000 Kiwis from all walks of life have visited our school at Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds.
We believe in learning through doing. Students take responsibility over the challenge ahead of them. Whether that’s leading the way on an a tramping expedition or managing their team to complete a kayak journey.
With your support amazing young people like Lizzie Brothwood – Mckee can discover their true potential.
I was born with autism, so I haven’t had the easiest start to life. I was only six months old when I was placed with my first foster family. I never had a long term stable home with set routines, like family dinners and bedtimes. I didn’t like going to school much. Being autistic means it can be difficult for me to make friends. I used to get a hard time from other kids who didn’t like that I was different, so people bullied me. I’m 20 now and I was the primary caregiver for my Mum who had lung disease. She was on oxygen 24/7 so I have to be around to look after her. Then I found out I had a scholarship to go to Outward Bound!
Luckily I had great support so Mum was looked after while I was away.
I loved every single activity we did. We built rafts, sailed, and rowed a 10 metre cutter in the Queen Charlotte Sound, did PT, conquered the high ropes, prepared meals, and even spent a night solo under a tent fly. I learnt that I have good leadership skills. I was able to support other people, I enjoy helping people if I can. I felt like I really relaxed and was able to just have fun and laugh. Sadly Mum passed away a few months after I returned from Outward Bound. It is really hard but my care worker and my friends give me great support. I’ve completed Civil Defence training, and successfully completed a First Aid course. I’m a volunteer for food rescue and I am part of a youth group. I also just found out I have been nominated for disabled sports person of the year in Ten-Pin Bowling!
Our focus lies in building transferable skill and attitudes that remain far beyond a participant’s time with us. Lessons learnt are applicable to work, study, home – and they last for life.
